To the left, you can see a photo I took with a Parisian theme including lots of stationery and a few other bits and bobs (such as the fan and my glasses). I really enjoyed creating this layout with a clear theme and colour scheme in mind and as a result, this was my favourite photo of the project. So this is what I decided to base my final piece on-it seemed to show my art style (quite messy yet pretty) and sum up the theme of the project.
Here is the final piece. There are a few details missing (mainly the floral design on the fan) that I didn't complete because I wanted to start my new project (I'll probably share that with you at some point) but overall I'm quite pleased with this. If I was to draw the floral design, I would use oil pastels which I haven't yet used on this. The mediums I have used are: coloured pencils, watercolour paint, acrylic paint, black fineliner and coloured biros. I made the background by marbling 8 pieces of A5 lined notepaper, with blue and red marbling ink. I love how this ties in with the theme and how little bits of this design show through on some drawings. However, what I don't like about this final piece (as well as the fact that it is not quite finished), is that it doesn't have the depth of the actual photo. What I mean by this is that I haven't made some of the colours bright enough to stand out and in some areas the tone isn't up to scratch. I regret using project life cards (the rectangles with words on or macaroons on) in the photo because they don't really have any noticeable tone to recreate, so they look very flat and dull on the final piece. Also, the shape of the glasses is completely wrong-I can never draw glasses right so I don't know why I included them in the photo! But for a first final piece I think I have done well to recreate the photo to a decent standard.
So that's my final piece! Hopefully I'll be back in 2 weeks like planned.
Over to you...
What did you think of my final piece? Let me know in the comments. Also do you take art at school? What's it like?
Your final piece looks stunning! I really like how you drew and painted the Eiffel Tower shaped scissors because it is all in proportion. The marbled background was a total success, and I think that without it it would look like something is missing ^U^
ReplyDeleteThe project life cards were actually quite nice, though I understand that you thought they sort of changed the depth of the photograph and the final piece.
I wear glasses too, and I actually own an outstanding and unusual amount of glasses, all of which are hard to draw... I really understand what you mean when you considered why you even put glasses there in the first place! They did turn out nice though. I do have one tip for painting glasses - to make them look more realistic on the painting, get some fast hardening PVA glue which can also be suitably used as a glazing medium (it should say on the packet), and apply some to the parts where you can see the highlights on your glasses in the photograph. That might make it look like the glasses in the final piece are shining with real light, and you might get extra marks for that!
Is this a GCSE art project? If it is, you are going to get super-high marks and you deserve them. I noticed one thing that perhaps you might want to fix - you see in the photograph you used a pice of pink paper on the top-right with an image of a camera on it - now look at your final piece - perhaps you could go over the camera image in your final piece with a thick black biro or a thin fine-liner? This could help it look more eye-catching and it would look even more like the photograph!
The project life cards are super cute in French! I am really inspired to create a piece of art with a Parisian theme too, and I think the mediums and materials you used were really suitable. Did you draw the pink Eiffel Tower in pink biro?
The cards with the macaroons are really pretty and The fan looks really life-like. Just add on the flowers to the fan and it will look more amazing - you could use pastels!
I have not yet reached my GCSEs yet, but I am getting closer and I am going to take art GCSEs! Could you reply with a couple of things that you think are the best about art GCSEs and the examinations/homework projects? I'd really love to know from your perspective and experience!
Lovely final piece! Love from Anael xxx

Thank you so much! Really? Are they all sorts of different shapes? I have classic geek glasses because I think they suit me best (although they're very generic, I spent hours searching for the right ones-I'm very picky)! But I see all sorts of unusual ones in Vogue sometimes, like electric blue ones in geometric shapes! The glue tip is very good, I hadn't thought of using glue on my art before. I know someone in my class used it to make 3D water drips though-it looked really cool!
DeleteThis was actually for a pretend GCSE art project. What I mean by this is that it was done at the end of year 10 to practice for the coursework I'm doing this year. It has all the same stages though. Thank you although I'm not sure it's realistic enough (which is what I aimed to do, and you have to make sure the style you set out to do is carried out) to get high marks. I actually used black fineliner on the camera but it doesn't show up very well in the photo. But yeah I agree it should be slightly thicker lines there. Yes I used a pink biro for one of the eiffel tower scissors.
Yes I was planning to use oil pastels if I had time to finish the fan with flowers! Ok GCSE Art...it's tough. But I absolutely love it. Lots of people in my class seem to have lost passion and interest for art since starting the GCSE style of work in year 10 since it's hard work. However if you love art and you keep reminding yourself of that I think you'll get through it and even enjoy it! In terms of testing, art is made up of coursework and exams. For my exam board I start with the coursework-a full sized sketchbook (with things like title page, artist pages, own photos, secondary sources, observational drawings and final piece plan). This is what I'm doing at the moment. Then you do a 10 hour exam for the final piece (based on the sketchbook work). Then you do a mini sketchbook as coursework. And tehn I think (but I'm not sure) you have a 5 hour exam for the final piece of this project. The timed exam was my downfall last year (but we did a surprise still life last year, it won't be like that this year). Anywya, I hope I've helped you with some of your questions. I personally love GCSE Art but it gets very stressful with the deadlines-aargh! Today I thought I'd not done enough art over the holidays (we basically had to do the whole project apart form development and final piece) but it turns out I'd done more than most people-so yeah it can make me stressy! :O
(Hey Megan! I meant to post this comment a long while back but the comments section didn't seem to be working so I'm posting it now... it might be a bit outdated!)
ReplyDeleteWow this is amazing!!
I know I'm late commenting but how did the school trips go? Were they art-related? :D
It's so awesome you chose the Parisian theme photo layout for your final piece because it was also my personal favourite from the theme collection! It has that really pretty, exotic vibe. ^^
And the final piece is simply gorgeous, I have no words! It's popping with beautiful pastel colours and soft pinks... the overall design is so lush and elaborate! Just by looking at this piece I feel as if I'm eating macarons in a delicious patisserie in Paris! The way you've toned down the colour to avaoid colour clashes is very well done too. This is so professional looking! It reminds me of the kind of pretty illustrated image you might find in a recount of someone who visisted France on holiday. :D
That's a lot of art mediums you listed there! It reminds me of something my friend told me (who just finished her art GCSE this year), that she had all her art utensils and materials covering the table and the floor all over the place haha. xD (Is that the kind of experience you've been having?) Good choice btw!
To be quite honest, I personally think the depth of the original photo isn't really needed anyway? I'd say the result has a good, official-looking effect in your piece and besides it's not too necessary to have 100% photo-realism... having the picture in your own style makes it look more personal and snazzy! :) Also the project life cards are great actually! They didn't strike me as a distraction and in fact I thought they were a perfect addition - it echoes that Parisian theme well!
I love how doing an art GCSE can show a person various different paths of art that you might not try otherwise! (Which is kind of the reason why I wish I'd been able to do it. xD) I'd also be super interested in seeing you do a tutorial on creating marbled paper! Just a suggestion of course, but the background addition there is super cute! <3
Hey Kenza!:D Don't worry about it! I'm sorry that I took ages to reply too! I just got a spare moment after school (I've now finished the crazy amount of homework they set over Summer-did you get much?) so I thought I'd check up on my blog! I'll comment on your new posts really soon too! Thank you so much! I'm glad you like it! The school trips were alright (no they weren't art related although I wish some of them were, we were meant to visit Liverpool on an art trip with my old art teacher but she gave the trip to year 8 instead *groans*). I went on a science intervention trip to a local uni (I didn't get near enough to my target grade last year). I thought we'd have extra interesting lectures from actual lecturers but no it was my ordinary teachers doing ordinary lessons (apart form the fact they were extra long)! :O I also had some trips to colleges and sixth forms, which were better trips because they were non-uniform and I did fun subjects like art and graphics (so I guess I did go on art trips hehe). Then I had the end of year trip to Alton Towers which was awesome! Have you been on any school trips recently?
DeleteAw thanks so much again Kenza! <3 I know what you meant about recount art after holidays; I see gorgeous letters on pinterest with sketches of holiday views like architecture on them. They make my mind wander to patisseries and coffee shops too! Haha relatable! I tend to cover my desk and chest of drawers (which my TV is sat on) with all sorts of art supplies! I tend to ask for storage solutions for birthdays and Christmas because I have a bit of a problem with stationery and art supplies as you know hehe! Thank you! But I think it might lose me marks (in the real coursework)because the rest of my sketchbook suggests that I was aiming for photorealism and you're meant to fulfill the style you set out out to do.
I'm sorry that you haven't been able to do GCSE Art, you'd have been amazing at it! I'd have loved to see your coursework and 10 hour/5 hour exams too! Although I'm not actually sure if we will have an opportunity to take pictures of the exam ones! :/ Maybe you could do a GCSE style project if you want to try it out! I could email you my instructions if you'd like to give it a little go! That would be a cool post idea but the only way I can marble paper is at school and I can't take my phone out to take photos (in fact there was a time when the school said we shouldn't even bring the phone in or we should hand it in to reception-but I don't follow that rule hehe)! Thanks again for your lovely comment! <3
